Ace cinematographer William Eubank (Wreckage, Caught In The Crossfire) takes us on a space odyssey circa 2039 which goes badly wrong for astronaut Lee James Miller (Gunner Wright). A total systems failure during his solo mission to stock-check an obsolete Russian space station leaves Miller alone, apparently abandoned and struggling both to keep himself sane and make sense of his life. But far from a sterile exercise in navel-gazing, Eubanks’ script infuses the lonely spaceman with a growing sense of purpose and self-worth in an age when social contact has become minimal, even challenging. Given the director’s credentials and this being part-homage to Kubrick’s 2001, Love’s visuals are both fresh and striking, ditto the soundtrack, even despite its indie budget.
Dir. William Eubank, USA 2011, 90 mins.
