The Leopard (Il Gattopardo)

3 Jan 2017

A grand, opulent technicolour epic, Luchino Visconti’s The Leopard (Il Gattpardo) tells the story of a fading Sicilian dynasty in the 1860s. Burt Lancaster stars as the aging prince watching his culture and fortune wane in the face of the revolution of the Risorgimento: the new ruling class represented by his impetuous nephew Tancredi (Alain Delon) and his fiancée Angelica (Claudia Cardinale). The closing scenes are widely considered some of the most spectacular in film history.

Awarded the Palme d’Or at the 1963 Cannes Film Festival, The Leopard translates Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa’s novel, and the history it recounts, into a truly cinematic masterpiece.
