Stillman’s characteristically droll and thoughtful tale of the demise of the 80s disco scene in America. Various wannabes try to get into New York's hottest disco, either through the glamourous front door route, or when that fails through the back door, elicitely opened by an old friend, now the Club's assistant manager. Inside, New York's most beautiful young things dance, drink and vie to be seen. Away from the club two of the wannabe's Alice (Chloe Sevigny) and the pushy Charlotte (Kate Beckinsale) decide to rent a flat together embarking on a frantic social life, hosting dinner parties in which they defensively debate whether they qualify as yuppies. With splendid production design from Ginger Tougas and a veritable parade of classic disco tracks this perceptively captures a flavour of a what the eighties was all about.
