Unusual as an unhurried chronicle of a deep physical and emotional relationship over a protracted period, Ira Sach’s award-winning drama is about a gay romance. Erik (Thure Lindhart) is a documentary filmmaker whose appetite for casual sex brings a chance encounter with closeted lawyer Paul (Zachary Booth), with whom the attraction is much more than purely sexual. Cohabitation leads to complications: drug addiction, the needs of straight friends and a loss of trust all take their toll, but also intensify the symbiosis. Shot with a grainy realism which reflects New York City in the late 1990s, Keep the Lights On is a moving meditation on lives that are lived close to the edge but are all the richer for it.
