Ricocheting around the world in August 2014, the images of photojournalist James Foley’s execution were a shocking statement of ISIS’s pitiless brutality. This documentary by his long-term friend Brian Oakes provides an often heart-wrenching insight into Foley’s character and motivations.
Extensive interviews with friends, colleagues and family reveal a driven, somewhat macho young man whose appetite for danger was first whetted as he covered Libya’s 2011 civil war, where he spent 44 days in captivity. Undaunted, and drawn to the conflict unfolding in Syria, he was again captured, and the American government refused to sanction a ransom payment – although such payments may have led to the release of his French and Danish colleagues also imprisoned by ISIS. Recreations of Foley’s captivity add dramatic depth to this sorry tale.
