This slick adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' controversial novel exorcises much of the violence and pornography that attracted notoriety surrounding the book's publication to instead focus on the source text's scathing social satire of 1980s consumer culture. Christian Bale is perfectly cast as Patrick Bateman, a wealthy Wall Street investment banker, who struggles to conceal his psychopathic ego from friends, family and colleagues as he descends deeper into illogical, gratuitous fantasies.
