This screening is followed by a Q&A with director Yance Ford and producer Joslyn Barnes
A 2018 Oscar nominee for Best Documentary Feature, Strong Island chronicles the arc of a family across history and geography, from the racial segregation of the Jim Crow South to the promise of New York City; from the presumed safety of middle class suburbs to the maelstrom of an unexpected and violent death. A deeply intimate and meditative film from director Yance Ford, Strong Island reflexively asks what one can do when grief is entwined with historical injustice, and how one grapples with the complicity of silence endemic within a nation with a false sense of justice.
Strong Island suggests ways in which activism enters a personal, intimate sphere, without compromising the impact of social and political critique, through film as a medium and the cinema as a forum.
