Early twentieth-century martial-arts grandmaster Man Ip (Leung, Hero, In The Mood For Love) leads a peaceful life in southern China until he is challenged by a recently retired rival from the north, Yutian Gong (Wang), who sends a seemingly invincible representative to fight in his place.
But then Gong’s daughter Er (Zhang, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon) arrives with a hidden agenda. A formidable fighter herself, she challenges Ip to a make-or-break contest.
Written and directed by Hong Kong-born auteur Kar-wai Wong (In The Mood For Love, 2046), this breathtakingly filmed, shrewdly plotted drama with unexpected twists is based the true story of Ip – the man who famously trained Bruce Lee – and will delight both martial-arts fans and those who appreciate the unique subtleties of contemporary Chinese filmmaking.
The Grandmaster, dir. Kar-wai Wong, Hong Kong/China, 2013, 108 mins
