Frames of Representation: The Letters (Las Letras) + Q&A

24 Apr 2016

“Mesmerising and endlessly surprising, The Letters delves into a corrupt miscarriage of justice in a Mexican province with a darkly imagistic, almost mystical atmosphere.” AnOther Magazine

UK Premiere

There is a Skype Q&A with Pablo Chavarría Gutiérrez following the screening.

A sensuous and philosophical story of corruption. Behind the dark, sensuous and almost hallucinatory imagery, a grim story is smouldering about a school teacher and social activist, who after a questionable trial was convicted for killing four police officers in a Mexican province. The letters he wrote to his daughter from prison are a fierce indictment against a corrupt system. Pablo Chavarría Gutiérrez attempts to transcend the traditional constraints of the documentary genre in favour of a sensorial and suggestive practice, without losing sight of its political and social message. Just as the activist’s letters to his daughter instil courage for continued resistance, The Letters is a film that inspires a renewed faith in the artistic relevance of documentary filmmaking.
