Film Africa: Democrats + Panel Discussion

7 Nov 2015

A panel discussion with Alex Magaisa and Professor Nic Cheeseman follows the screening.

The tortuous process of cross-party negotiation behind Zimbabwe’s politically unstable 2013 constitution lays the foundation for Danish director Camilla Nielsson’s riveting documentary. By following the co-chairpersons of the process on both sides of the political divideruling party ZANU-PF, and opposition party MDCthe film exposes the various political, local and personal interests at play. As the two men set out on countrywide grassroots consultations, the mountainous gap between the two sides serves as a rare, vital snapshot of a democracy still very much in its initial stages.

Join our panel of experts after the screening, featuring Zimbabwean lawyer and academic Alex Magaisa, who was a technical adviser to the committee that wrote the constitution and participated in the drafting process, and also features in the film. Joining him will be Professor Nic Cheeseman from Oxford University, whose research focuses on democracy in African contexts. The panel will explore Paul Manganwa and Douglas Mwonzora's battle in the context of Zimbabwe's modern history, shedding light on where the country's political and economic crisis sits in the trajectory of democracy in the continent.
