With this startling journey into darkest England, director Wheatley (Kill List, Sightseers) proves once again that he’s one of the most exciting and unpredictable talents in film today. Falling somewhere between Apocalypse Now, Witchfinder General, and an episode of Time Team, A Field in England is a nightmarish black comedy that will linger with you long after the menacing final scenes.
Set in 1648 during the Civil War, it follows a small group of deserters who flee a bloody battle. Lost and hungry, they stumble into a wide field, where an alchemist (Michael Smiley, Kill List) tricks them into eating a bowl of powerfully hallucinogenic mushrooms, before forcing them to look for a ‘treasure’ he believes is buried nearby. As they slowly fall victim to the terrifying energies trapped inside the field, what follows is both eerily beautiful and deeply unsettling.
