This vibrant and witty coming of age comedy follows the hilarious misadventures of three nerdy school friends in a tough Los Angeles neighbourhood, working hard to qualify for university while trying to emulate the 90s rappers they worship. One night they guilelessly attend a party run by Dom (A$AP Rocky), a local gang member, and accidently end up with a rucksack full of drugs. They subsequently attempt to sell off the stash before it's discovered, and endeavour to navigate the bizarre underworld they’ve been thrown into.
Writer-director Rick Famuyiwa (Our Family Wedding) has created another amiable, slickly paced and shot escapade, with excellent performances from the three geeks–turned-gangstas: Jib (Tony Revolori, The Grand Budapest Hotel), Diggy (Kiersey Clemons) and their charismatic leader Malcolm (Shameik Moore). Producer Forest Whitaker cameos as the film’s wry narrator.
Dope, dir. Rick Famuyiwa, 2015, 103 mins.
