Dick Jewell, from four thousand threads (2015)

Dick Jewell: four thousand threads

2 Dec 2015

Artist Dick Jewell is in conversation with curator David Campany, marking the launch of his new publication four thousand threads (2015). Examining the phenomena of online photo sharing, the book amasses a vast archive of photographs covering various 'threads', from planking to bombing and animal selfies. Much like the artist’s 1978 book Found Photos, this meticulously edited work reflects the artist’s long-term interests in communal behaviour and societal shifts.

Dick Jewell graduated from the Royal College of Art, London in 1978, with an MA in Printmaking. He has gone on to work as an artist, filmmaker, music video director, record label frontman, designer and cameraman. His work is represented in public collections including the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Victoria & Albert Museum, London and Arts Council of Great Britain.

David Campany is a writer, curator and artist, and Reader in Photography at the University of Westminster. Writing mainly about photography, art and cinema, his books include Art and Photography (Phaidon 2003), Photography and Cinema (2008), Jeff Wall: Picture for Women(2010), Gasoline (2013) and Walker Evans: the magazine work (2014). Recent curatorial projects include Mark Neville, Deeds Not Words (The Photographers’ Gallery London, 2013) and Anonymes: Unnamed America in Photography and Film (Le Bal Paris, 2010).

This event is followed by a book launch in the ICA bar with music from Jack Jewell.
