Culture Now: Stephen Prina

20 Apr 2012

Join American artist Stephen Prina in this lunch-time talk, exploring his multi-faceted, cross-referencing practice that questions art in the context of cultural and institutional formatting. Prima has been described as post-conceptualist and works in diverse media including installation, painting, drawing, film, performance and music.

Whether his subject matter has been the paintings of Manet, the work of architect Bruce Goff,or a gallery’s past catalogues, Prina constantly addresses the relationship between artist and audience.

Stephen Prina's recent solo shows in Vienna, Cologne, New York and Berlin are the latest in an exhibition portfolio that stretches back to 1976. His works are in the collections of major institutions including MoMA New York, the Museum of Modern Art, Los Angeles, and Rotterdam’s Museum Boijmans-van Beuningen. His musical output has ranged from a solo piano performance at the Whitney Biennial, New York, 2008, to joining the line-up of psychedelic noise band The Red Krayola.

Prina is also professor at Harvard’s Department of Visual and Environmental Studies and has taught at other institutions in the US and France.
