New York artist Joe Scanlan discusses his practice with London-based producer Manick Govinda. Taking multiple forms, from sculpture and design to publications and fictional personae, there is a wilful subterfuge running through much of Scanlan’s work. Largely known for co-scripting the life and work of fictional artist Donelle Woolford, Scanlan’s practice is internationally-respected for its conceptual rigor and dark humour.

Joe Scanlan’s work is in the public collections of K21; Tate Modern, London; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; the Stedelijk Museum Voor Aktuele Kunst, Ghent; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. Scanlan began teaching at Princeton in 2009, when he was appointed professor of art and director of the Program in Visual Arts. He holds a BFA in Sculpture from the Columbus College of Art and Design, Ohio.

Manick Govinda is Head of Artists' Advisory Services and an Artists' Producer at Artsadmin where he developed a range of artist support schemes. He has worked with Turner Prize shortlisted artist Zarina Bhimji on her critically-acclaimed films for Documenta 11, Out of Blue(2002) and produced Yellow Patch (2011), the centrepiece work for Bhimji's retrospective show at Whitechapel Gallery (2012). He also produced three film works by the award-winning artist Zineb Sedira, and co-curated the Town Hall Hotel artworks commissioning new works by Peter Liversidge, Debbie Lawson and Claire Morgan to name a few. He is a member of the Mayor of London’s Cultural Strategy Group and is a non-executive director of a-n The Artists’ Information Company and The Showroom. He is also a freelance writer and campaigner on free expression and on arts and immigration issues. Govinda also edited and commissioned writers for a-n’s Future Forecast series.
