Following on from his solo show at Maureen Paley, David Salle joins us for this lunchtime talk to present a new lecture titled ‘The As-if in Art’. Salle will provide an overview of his work while speaking about the distinction between the ‘pictorial’ and the ‘presentational’ within his work and that of his contemporaries.

David Salle helped define the post-modern sensibility in art with his varied pictorial language that sets up a rigorous dialogue between figuration and abstraction. As a painter whose work comes out of a tradition of installation and performance, Salle is also a long-time collaborator with choreographer Karole Armitage, designing sets and costumes for many of her ballets and operas.

His work has been exhibited in museums and galleries worldwide and is represented in the permanent collections of museums in America, Europe and Asia. He has contributed essays, reviews and commentary to various publications as well as writing numerous exhibition catalogues and anthologies. He lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.
