Crossings: Stories of Migration is an ICA-led UK-wide film and events programme supported by the BFI using National Lottery funding and in partnership with the Goethe-Institut and the School of Film & Television, Falmouth University
Winner of the Golden Osella for Best Director at the 1994 Venice Film Festival, Lamerica is one of Gianni Amelio’s best known films. Amelio portrays migrants fleeing from Albania to Italy, showing the migrants’ hopes and dreams, effects of dictatorship and influences of other countries on Albanian culture and politics. This is one of the first cinematic depictions of mass migration to Italy—a socio-political phenomenon that continues to centre public discourse during the ongoing wave of migration to Europe.
