The Consequences of Love

27 Dec 201329 Dec 2013

A man sits, impeccably dressed, smoking. We know nothing about him; he refuses all conversation; he waits. We wait. Suddenly, the screen explodes into life, soundtrack ablaze, as he burns through the streets in a brand new BMW. We wait again; the tension mounts. Who is he? What is he? Why is he there? It’s an Italian film – and as stylish as Milan fashion week - so perhaps we should not be too surprised to learn that the answer lies with the Mafia...

An ice-cool psychological thriller, The Consequences of Love is the mesmeric story of former stockbroker Titta di Girolamo (Paulo Servillo), serving out a life-sentence from Cosa Nostra in an anonymous hotel in a Swiss-Italian town near Lake Lugarno. Daily, he sits in the lobby, smoking cigarettes with elegant poise. He observes the hotel guests and especially the bartender, Sofia (Magnani, granddaughter of Italy’s famous actress Anna Magnani), but never acknowledges her attempts to be friendly. At night, he plays cards with the former hotel owners who lost the hotel to gambling, before he gets ready for another night without sleep. His detachment from the world is complete, until Sofia breaks through his reserve - and his neatly organised world turns upside down.
