Although he successfully sued the Daily Mirror for suggesting he was gay, it was an open Hollywood secret that between 1976 and 1982 the outrageously camp Liberace was in a relationship with his young chauffeur, Scott Thorson.
Soderbergh drew on Thorson’s autobiography to make this biopic, starring a highly convincing Michael Douglas as Liberace, and an equally plausible Matt Damon as the teenage Thorson. With Rob Lowe as Liberace’s pinch-faced plastic surgeon, a supercilious Dan Aykroyd as his agent, and Debbie Reynolds as his sanctified mother, Behind the Candelabra is a real treat - funny, melodramatic, shocking and sad.
Nominated for a Palme D'Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival.
