This illuminating documentary takes us inside the case of the mysterious literary sensation JT LeRoy – a creature so perfect for his time that if he didn’t exist, someone would have to invent him. JT’s real life as a transgender teen hustler who survived a tough childhood seemed to spill flawlessly into his prose. Remaining tantalisingly elusive, the renegade rock-star author was lauded by celebrity fans including Winona Ryder, Tom Waits, Courtney Love and Madonna.
In 2006, it was discovered that JT was in fact the invention of 40-year-old Laura Albert. Albert reveals how she was able to ‘be’ JT for over a decade. She presents an epic and entertaining account of her astonishing odyssey, untangling the intricate myth she built. She discusses the reasons why she channelled her own self-expression and creativity through an alternative identity in this stranger-than-fiction tale.
