Artists' Film Biennial 2014: Curating Artists’ Film

A chaired panel discussion unpacking the dynamic relationship between commissioning, collecting, curation and preservation of artists' film. Offering a variety of perspectives from a range of international specialists, this panel discussion examines the interconnected relationships between these respective aspects, and points towards future developments in the 21st Century.

The panel is chaired by Steven Cairns, ICA Associate Curator of Artists' Film and Moving Image and introduced by Sarah Philp, Head of Programmes at the Art Fund. Panellists include curators George Clark (Tate Modern, London), Łukasz Mojsak (Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw) and Sarah Perks (Cornerhouse, Manchester).

George Clark is the Assistant Curator: Film at Tate Modern where he's curated screenings of work by Ute Aurand, Camille Henrot, Mike Kuchar and Rose Lowder and co-curated the series Assembly: A Survey of Artist Film and Video in Britain 2008-2013 at Tate Britain. He is on the advisory board of the Bangkok Experimental Film Festival and curated the Lav Diaz focus at the AV Festival 2012. He co-edited the book 'A Detour Around Infermental' following the exhibition Infermental co-curated with Dan Kidner and James Richards for Focal Point Gallery, 2010. He has written for Afterall, Art Monthly, Mousse Magazine and Sight & Sound among others. He has collaborated with artists including Beatrice Gibson and Luke Fowler on new film works.

Łukasz Mojsak is an art historian, linguist, and team member of Filmoteka Muzeum of the Museum of Modern Art in Warsaw dealing with research and propagation of artists’ moving image. Curator of the Museum project Propaganda Projector at the music festival Heineken Opener 2013 in Gdynia, Poland, and Wojciech Bąkowski Profile screening at Internationale Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen in 2014, among others. Translator of books and texts on art, philosophy and culture, including the Polish edition of Deschooling Society by Ivan Illich, 2010, among many others.

Sarah Perks, Artistic Director, (Visual Art & Film), Cornerhouse & HOME (Manchester), is an international curator, film programmer and producer with over ten years experience of contemporary visual art, independent film and engagement. A specialist in artist feature length film (setting up Cornerhouse Artist Film in 2011), performance and participatory art, Sarah has worked extensively with international established artists and filmmakers including Phil Collins, Jeremy Deller, Rosa Barba, Rashid Rana, Brillante Mendoza, Gillian Wearing, Jamie Shovlin and David Shrigley. Recent curatorial credits include group show ANGUISH AND ENTHUSIASM: WHAT DO YOU DO WITH YOUR REVOLUTION ONCE YOU’VE GOT IT?  and Los Angeles performance and video artist STANYA KAHN: IT’S COOL I’M GOOD.
