Director François Ozon pays homage to the great Hollywood melodramas of the 30s and 40s with this stylised and very literary adaptation of Elizabeth Taylor's famous novel from the 50s (not that Elizabeth Taylor). Romola Garai (the contrite nurse in Atonement) plays a grocer's daughter and aspiring author with dreams of fame, wealth and romance. All three come her way when her overcooked love stories become bestsellers but, of course, literary stardom doesn't make her a better person.
