Andrey Zvyagintsev Retrospective: Leviathan + Q&A with Andrey Zvyagintsev

3 Nov 2015

There will be a Q&A with Andrey Zvyagintsev following the screening, hosted by The Guardian film critic Peter Bradshaw.

In a down-and-out industrial town on the shores of the Barents Sea, the film follows Kolya (Aleksey Serebryakov), a local mechanic, who tries to save his family from eviction by the town’s greedy mayor who, as Kolya believes, covets his land. As he takes on the powerful and corrupt state, Kolya loses his house, his wife and his freedom in quick succession.

Hailed by criticsand equally denounced by Russian authoritiesas a searing criticism of Putin’s Russia, Leviathan is a modern-day parable of an everyman’s struggle against forces that are beyond his control. The film won a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film and an Academy Awards nomination in the same category.
