16-year-old Billie’s reluctant path to independence is accelerated when her mother reveals plans for gender transition. Billie is obliged to live with her father, and sees her mother just once a week on the titular Tuesdays.
52 Tuesdays, itself filmed once a week, every Tuesday for a year, unfolds in realist time and almost documentary style. Initially shocked by her mother’s revelation, Billie begins to reflect on and explore her own sexuality, alternating between meetings with her mother and rendezvous with two fellow teens in a disused building. Boasting heartfelt central performances from its non-professional cast, this unique and at times provocative film tells an emotionally charged story of desire, responsibility and transformation.
52 Tuesdays, dir. Sophie Hyde, Australia 2013, 110 mins.
