ICA is pleased to present this limited edition sculpture by American artist Lutz Bacher, to accompany Black Beauty (25 September – 17 November 2013). Bacher’s first major solo exhibition in the UK, this exhibition featured works made specifically for the ICA alongside a number of other recent sculptures and installations.
Exhibiting under a pseudonym since the beginning of her career in the 1970s, Bacher uses found images and objects in her practice that allude to her personal interest in the cosmological. From her early photo-based projects to recent sculptural ensembles, Bacher’s work evokes an otherworldly quality that instils found materials with alternate voices.
Just as the artist has avoided identifying herself as a fixed subject, the universe she creates is depicted in constantly shifting shapes, uncanny repetitions, and morphing forms. Opening up the relationship between objects, images, audio and text Lutz Bacher's work is as elusive as the artist herself.
Bacher's edition for the ICA relates to the artist’s latest sand work Black Beauty. The installation, consisting of over 30 tonnes of the industrial material black silicate, is spread across the floor of the lower gallery and takes its name from the title of the exhibition. On this occasion the sand is used to represent more spiritual, primordial matter both in the gallery and for this artist’s edition Black Box where it is transferred to an ‘urn-like’ vessel.
Lutz Bacher lives and works in New York. Recent solo exhibitions include: Secession, Vienna (2016); Greene Naftali, New York (2015); Aspen Art Museum, Colorado (2014); Greene Naftali, New York (2014); National Museum of Denmark, Copenhagen (2014); Kunsthalle Zürich, Zürich (2013); Cabinet, London (2011); MoMA PS1 Contemporary Art Center, New York (2009); and Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis (2008).
