The Institute of Contemporary Arts presents a new edition by Frances Stark.

Stark’s practice centres on language, particularly the written word. Using drawing, collage, Powerpoints, video and performance, she articulates the ways in which the graphic display of language itself carries meaning, both personal and political, questioning perceptions of ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture and communication. Stark navigates broad themes from the practice of writing, to pedagogy, poetics, and procrastination.

Proposal for a Peace Poster started life as a post by Stark on Instagram, which she created in response to Donald Trump’s presidential campaign and his heavy dependence on Twitter as a means to promote his specific brand of politics.

The edition, a two-colour silkscreen print with deboss elements, takes the Twitter logo of a stylised white dove on a sky-blue background as its departure point. To this, Stark has added the words ‘War’ and ‘Peace’, referencing Tolstoy’s great classic. Proposal for a Peace Poster is at once meditative and reactive, critiquing the socio-political climate in America under Trump, and the position of language in the age of social media.
