ICA is delighted to present a new edition by Helen Johnson, created to mark her recent solo exhibition Warm Ties (1 Feb 2017 – 16 Apr 2017) in collaboration with Artspace, Sydney.
Johnson uses the building up of surfaces as both a technically driven choice and a critical one; using layering as a metaphor to question the forces and schema at play in the on-going creation of the Australian identity.
Argument utilises Johnson’s signature, layered painting style, as the aesthetic basis for the digital archival print. With deboss, gold foil and nylobag silk screen overlays, a printed simulacra of Johnson’s painterly style is elicited. Depicting two people deep in conversation, arguing, the edition follows Johnson’s socio-political interest in the formation of Australian identity.
Helen Johnson is an artist based in Melbourne. Recent solo exhibitions include Barron Field as part of the 2016 Glasgow International, Slow Learners at Château Shatto, Los Angeles, 2015 and Cafe Fatigue at Sutton Gallery, Melbourne, 2015. She has recently exhibited work as part of Painting. More Painting at the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art; In my absence at Jocelyn Wolff, Paris; and Pleasure and Reality at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne. In 2015 she published a book titled Painting is a Critical Form, developed from a PhD in Fine Art completed at Monash University where she is also a lecturer. Johnson is represented by Château Shatto in Los Angeles, Pilar Corrias Gallery in London and Sutton Gallery in Melbourne.
