Nkisi and Moor Mother: New and Old Sounds
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Photo: Bob Sweeney 2019

As part of their live commission Temporal Deprogramming, artists Black Quantum Futurism (BQF) invite London-based producer, musician, DJ and curator Nkisi to perform as part of an evening exploring sounds both ancient and forward-looking.

A special improvised performance from Nkisi is followed by a live set by electronic musician, poet and BQF founding member Camae Ayewa (Moor Mother).
Born in Kinshasa and Belgian-raised, Nkisi (aka Melika Ngombe Kolongo) co-founded the NON WORLDWIDE collective alongside Chino Amobi and Angel-HO. Having released her first full LP 7 Directions on the UIQ label this year, and a follow-up EP The Dark Orchestra on Warp offshoot Arcola, her recent live performances have been a captivating cross-talk of African rhythms, uncompromising European hard dance tropes, foreboding synth melodies and a relentless, galvanising energy.
