In Production: OPEN CALL
Institute of Contemporary Arts

Are you a London-based creative person between the ages of 16 – 30? Do you have boundary-pushing ideas and a drive to create and deliver a new project? Or have you always had ambitions to make something but haven’t found the right support?

We are looking for a diverse group of emerging artists to produce new audio, moving image, or interactive works intended for broadcast on the BBC as part of New Creatives, a national talent development scheme supported by BBC Arts and Arts Council England. Representatives from our Production Partners including Chisenhale GalleryDazed MediaNTSSPACE, the Visible Institute at Kingston School of Art and Werkflow will work with artists to develop their commission from initial idea to delivery. No prior experience is required to apply; the only criteria is that you are based in London and between the ages of 16 – 30. Works can explore storytelling, performance, spoken word, poetry, dance, scripted drama, and experimentation with sound, image and structure. We want you to challenge what constitutes art, make people think, and encourage new ways of understanding ourselves and the world in which we live.

We are looking for proposals that are …

Relevant: We want to hear about ideas and themes that matter to you and your community (however you might like to define it).

Original: We want proposals that are innovative, extraordinary and mould-breaking.

Timely: We want to give a platform to ideas that reflect people’s lives here and now.

Shareable: We want your ideas to be dynamic and shareable so that they can reach as many people as possible.
New Creatives is a series of commissioning opportunities developed by BBC Arts and Arts Council England for emerging artists under 30 who work with audio or moving image. The scheme will take place over two years and will encompass four open calls. Alongside New Creatives, the ICA will be offering additional opportunities, events and workshops as part of the ongoing programme, In Production.

Prepare to submit your proposal

To submit a proposal for an audio, moving image, or interactive work, please read through the requirements and find a link to our online portal below. We’ll be asking for a description of your proposal along with examples of your work and information about yourself, including any relevant experience.

For our audio commissions, we are interested in proposals for works that will push boundaries and surprise listeners with their inventiveness and ingenuity. Audio works might take the form of spoken word, poetry, experimental narrative, or soundscapes, or combine these forms to create new approaches to sound and story. Audio works can range between 5 and 15 minutes.

For our moving image commissions, we want to hear new voices and see visual experimentation that is exciting and memorable. We’re looking for strong proposals that demonstrate the breadth of possibility offered by the medium – this might be through innovation in style or structure, or new ways of working with narrative, animation, performance, scripted drama or dance. Moving image works can range from 90 seconds to 3 minutes.

For our interactive commissions, we are looking for works which employ new and emerging technologies to provide insights into powerful experiences, situations or locations. Works might be made with 360 video, augmented, mixed, or virtual reality, binaural audio, or gaming technologies.
