Workshop: The New Avant-Garde in Contemporary Spanish Cinema
Institute of Contemporary Arts

Los materiales, Colectivo Los Hijos, Spain 2009, 75 min.

Held in conversation with Eloy Enciso (Endless Night, Arraianos, Pic-nic), Natalia Marín (Julio Iglesias' house, New Madrid, Los materiales) and Javier Fernández Vázquez (A Storm Was Coming, Los materiales), the workshop aims to examine and contextualise this prolific period in Spanish avant-garde cinema and its current prominence on the international festival circuit. Drawing on the work of a new generation of directors including Carla Simón, Luis López Carrasco, Pilar Palomero and Elena López Riera, as well as more established cineastes such as Oliver Laxe and Albert Serra, the discussion will also locate Enciso, Marín and Fernández Vázquez’s individual practices within the wider scope of Spanish experimental cinema.
