Set in a divided Berlin of 1987, Wim Wenders’ Wings of Desire is a visionary tale of angels in Berlin who orbit those in crisis, listening to their thoughts and offering guidance. Using the writings of Rilke as inspiration, Wenders co-wrote the film’s screenplay with Austrian novelist Peter Handke, giving the film a singularly poetic and meditative tone. In one of the most emblematic roles of his career, Bruno Ganz plays a melancholic angel who longs for mortality after falling in love with a trapeze artist.
