UK premieres of two found footage works by directors Leandro Listorti and John Torres, introduced by Matthew Barrington and Catherine Grant of the Essay Film Festival.
The latest film by celebrated Filipino filmmaker John Torres, We Still Have to Close Our Eyes is constructed from B-roll and unused footage from the sets of a number of recent film productions from the Philippines – including works by directors Lav Diaz and Erik Matti. The film interweaves this repurposed material into a sci-fi narrative which explores the controlling presence of police and government through social media.
The first feature-length work from Argentinian director Leandro Listorti, The Endless Film (La película infinita), is an expansive, multi-layered compilation assembled in the archives of the Buenos Aires film museum. Tracing a national cinema that never was, the film is compiled from a succession of fragments from incomplete works of Argentine cinema from the 1950s to the present, invoking the ghosts of Argentina’s dictatorial past.
