The Sharks, dir. Lucía Garibaldi, Uruguay-Argentina-Spain 2019, 80 min. English subtitles

There are unwelcome visitors in the coastal waters around the tourist town where fifteen-year-old Rosina lives with her sister and parents. When a shark is assumed to have killed a sea lion, the community sets up a WhatsApp group to protect its interests. But Rosina has other matters on her mind. There’s an uneasy relationship with her sister and a burgeoning attraction to one of the workers her father employs in his gardening business. Romina Bentancur excels as the disarming teenager whose inscrutability proves increasingly unnerving. Debut director Lucía Garibaldi demonstrates a keen eye for the undercurrents that lie beneath the domestic situations that form the film’s narrative backbone, crafting an intriguing feature about desire, sexuality and dangers that remain unsaid.
