Artists’ Film Club

Juliet Jacques’ recent film examines how contemporary Ukraine-based artists – inspired by radical ideals as well as queer and feminist theory – are looking back at the country’s socialist history and attempting to build a more utopian future. Since the Euromaidan Revolution of 2014, Ukrainian politics have largely been contested between pro-European Union neoliberals and far-right nationalists, united only by their hatred of the Soviet past.

This premiere of Revivification: Art, Activism and Politics in Ukraine (2018) is followed by a conversation between writer and filmmaker Juliet Jacques and the film’s cinematographer and co-editor Oksana Kazmina.
Juliet Jacques is a writer and filmmaker based in London. She has published two books: Rayner Heppenstall: A Critical Study (Dalkey Archive Press, 2007) and Trans: A Memoir (Verso, 2015). Her short fiction, essays and journalism have appeared in Granta, London Review of Books, The Guardian, Tribune, Frieze, Sight & Sound, Filmwaves and many other places. Her short films have screened in galleries and festivals worldwide. 

Oksana Kazmina is a Ukrainian documentary filmmaker, media artist and performer based in Kiev and is a co-founder of artistic collective OKCAHAS and the Body Practices project, who recently exhibited in the show A Space of One's Own, PinchukArtCentre, Kiev (2018/19). Kazmina’s work has been featured in the Berlin International Film Festival (2014), Kyiv Biennial (2015), Wiesbaden International Film Festival (2016), and Odessa Biennial (2017). 

Revivification: Art, Activism and Politics in Ukraine is directed and narrated by Juliet Jacques, shot and edited by Oksana Kazmina, and commissioned by CHASE (Consortium for the Arts and Humanities in the South-East) and the IZOLYATSIA platform for cultural initiatives in Kiev.
