Our Time (Nuestro Tiempo), Dir. Carlos Reygadas, Mexico / France / Germany / Denmark / Sweden 2018, 173 min., Spanish with English subtitles

Mexican auteur Carlos Reygadas’ Our Time is an unsparing account of a marriage in crisis, starring the director and his real-life spouse Natalia López. Disavowing the conventions of popular cinema, this deeply personal and provocative work asks challenging questions about the nature of romantic relationships outside of social norms.

Through an approach that mirrors non-fiction filmmaking traditions, Reygadas depicts the shared life of ranch owners Juan (Reygadas) and Esther (López), who live on the outskirts of Mexico City with their three children. When horse-breaker Phil becomes the object of Esther’s affections, Juan becomes profoundly distraught as he is forced to confront his precarious sense of pride and masculine identity.
