Institute of Contemporary Arts
Filmworker, Dir. Tony Zierra, USA, 2017, 94 min.

Director Tony Zierra puts filmworker Leon Vitali centerstage in this documentary about his staggering career and creative involvement with director Stanley Kubrick. Vitali, a budding actor, initially starred in Kubrick’s period drama Barry Lyndon in the role of Lord Bullingdon, and this initial foray into Kubrick’s creative sphere, sealed the deal on what became a 30-year working relationship.

Filmworker chronicles Vitali’s trajectory as actor-cum-filmworker and details the crucial role he played in supporting Kubrick’s prodigious career from behind the scenes. Alongside feature interviews with other actors, family member and film industry professionals who worked with the two men, Vitali unearths a litany of unseen mementos, discusses his crucial contributions to films such as The Shining and Full Metal Jacket, and in the process, reveals the sacrifices, devotion and creative fire their relationship inspired.
