Fando y Lis
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Fando y Lis, dir. Alejandro Jodorowsky, Mexico 1968, 98 min., Spanish with English subtitles, 15

The contentious first feature from iconoclastic filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky screens in a new digital restoration.

Renowned for having caused a full-scale riot when it was first screened in Mexico in 1968, the film follows young lovers Fando and Lis as they search for the mythical city of Tar. In their pursuit of the enchanted city, the couple navigates a hellish desert landscape populated by devilish figures who each represent a repressive ideology or world view.

While lesser known than Jodorowsky’s cult touchstones El Topo and The Holy Mountain, Fando y Lis is every bit as fierce and subversive as the director’s later work.
