Casa de Lava, dir. Pedro Costa, Portugal / France / Germany 1995, 110 min., Portuguese and Cape Verdean creole with English subtitles
Director Pedro Costa joins us for a Q&A following this screening of his second feature, in which he brilliantly reimagines Jacques Tourneur’s classic I Walked with a Zombie (1943) as a reflection on his country’s colonial legacy.
Mariana (Inês de Medeiros), a nurse, accompanies Leão (Isaach de Bankolé) to his home in Cape Verde after an accident sends him into a coma. Yet Leão goes unrecognised by his fellow citizens, leaving Mariana trapped with and eventually entranced by a mysterious community. Foreshadowing Costa’s masterful later films, Casa de Lava is also an extraordinary, ravishing work in its own right.
