Olivia Erlanger and Luis Ortega Govela: Garage
Institute of Contemporary Arts
Courtesy of Olivia Erlanger & Luis Ortega Govela / DIS

These three episodes form part of artist Olivia Erlanger and architect Luis Ortega Govela's ongoing documentary project Garage which extends from their 2018 book Garage (MIT Press), exploring the history of the garage, from its invention by Frank Lloyd Wright to its transformation into an incubator for subcultures and tech entrepreneurship.

Filmed on location in Merced, California, they consider the evolution of this architectural turned cultural construct, exploring how the garage has come to serve as guest room, game room, home gym, wine cellar, and secret bondage lair. These provocative deconstructions employ the garage as a lens through which to view the advent of suburbia, the myth of the perfect family, and the degradation of the American dream.
Olivia Erlanger (b. 1990, New York, NY) lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. In 2018 Olivia Erlanger and Luis Ortega Govela co-wrote Garage (MIT Press), a secret history of the garage as a space of creativity, from its invention by Frank Lloyd Wright to its use by start-ups and practicing bands. The following year Erlanger and Ortega Govela made a feature-length documentary based on the publication, which screened at the ICA London and on Dis.art. Her most recent text is an essay titled The Modern Shower: From Prison Control to Suburban Purity, available online for PIN UP Magazine (2020). Last year Erlanger presented the solo exhibitions Home is a Body at Soft Opening, London (2020) and Split-level Paradise at Bel Ami, Los Angeles, CA (2020). The artist has participated in recent group exhibitions at Aspen Art Museum, Aspen; Swiss Institute, New York; Daelim Museum, Seoul; Dallas Art Museum, Dallas and Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen. Her work has been featured in publications including Frieze, Mousse Magazine, Flash Art, The New Yorker, Art in America, CURA, Kaleidoscope, Financial Times, Artforum and T Magazine

Luis is a Mexican architect and writer sheltering in place in Los Angeles. He is the co-founder of Ã…YR, an art collective which explores the complex evolution of home. The collective has exhibited internationally, including at the British Pavilion for the Venice Architecture Biennale and at the 9th Berlin Biennale of Contemporary Art. He is the co-author of GARAGE, a book on the architecture and image of the garage published by MIT Press which has been translated into Russian by Strelka Press. The book was also adapted into a documentary and was part of the CPH:DOX festival official selection.
