Read

Black Film, British Cinema
I was introduced to the ICA while reading Stuart Hall’s seminal essay ‘New Ethnicities’, which was published in the issue of the ICA’s Document series that emerged from a one-day conference held at the ICA in February 1988. Contributors Kobena Mercer, Coco Fusco, June Givanni, Paul Gilroy and others discuss what were then contemporary debates about representation, race, ethnicity, national identity and culture in terms that still feel relevant today.

Join

The Superrationals with Stephanie LaCava & Chris Kraus
Join writer Stephanie LaCava in celebrating her new novel The Superrationals, which sets female friendship at the intersection of counterculture and the multimillion dollar art industry. She will be reading from the book on 12 November, followed by a conversation with Semiotext(e) writer and publisher Chris Kraus.

Watch

Country in Focus: Ukraine
Switzerland’s Short Film Festival, the 24th International Kurzfilmtage Winterthur, features a special focus on Ukraine alongside shorts in their Main Focus section on mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Catch Oleksiy Radynski’s film Integration (2014) in the Underground Resistances programme alongside many others on the country’s contemporary situation.

Riar Rizaldi: Kasiterit
After screening in 2019 at the perennially edgy and prolific Locarno Film Festival, Kasiterit, directed by born Indonesian and Hong Kong-based artist and filmmaker Riar Rizaldi, is a playful essay addressing neo-colonial labour and the myth of immateriality in the digital age. This intriguing 18-minute piece is now currently available on the Vdrome online platform until 23 November, accompanied by an interview between Rizaldi and Julian Ross, a curator and writer based in Amsterdam.

Listen

Lol K: The Breeze
‘The Breeze’ by London-based duo Lol K is a recent release on one of my favourite labels Halcyon Veil. Two of the tracks feature LA Timpa and Coby Sey, and the album includes visual contributions by Jenkin Van Zyl.

Track of the Day

Nina Simone: Feeling Good (1965)

Birds flying high
You know how I feel
Sun in the sky
You know how I feel
Breeze driftin’ on by
You know how I feel

It’s a new dawn
It’s a new day
It’s a new life
For me
And I’m feeling good
I’m feeling good
