Judith Butler cites two main lessons we can learn from Covid-19: that of a shared vulnerability of our interdependent embodied social lives, and the likelihood of dying as the fatal consequence of a pervasive social inequality. For some of her students, she writes, ‘grief seems like grieving the loss of hope itself’, yet in the arts she sees a heightened possibility for the understanding of our pandemic world.

Through the voices of this diverse cast of performers reciting intimate monologues from his plays, this project has given me a renewed appreciation for the words of William Shakespeare. It was produced by actor and director Elliot Barnes-Worrell, and features actors Amaka Okafor, Eric Kofi Abrefa, and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith, as well as poets Belinda Zhawi, Inua Ellams, and others.
Commissioned for Cynthia Silveira’s project ‘Frequencies’, Nadeem Din-Gabisi’s film MASS takes as its starting point Tina Campt’s concept of ‘Black visual frequency’. The piece focuses on the invisible transmission of radio waves within urban environments and gives space to the depiction of intimacy, sanctuary and solidarity.
Here Munich’s Kammerspiele presents a selection of recordings of their theatrical productions on their ‘digital stage’ Kammer 4. Tonight is the Lebanese playwright and artist’s performative lecture ‘Make Me Stop Smoking’, which reconstructs the crisis-torn landscape of Lebanon via testimonies, photos and newspaper clippings. It is available for 24 hours from 7pm BST.
Today at 3pm via Instagram Live, filmmakers Mania Akbari and Mark Cousins will discuss the essay film genre – its implications as a cinematic art form and its relationship to the politics of body representation.
